Description

In Prezier, a historic Rundling village in Lemgow, Lower Saxony, a traditional North German hall house from 1820/23 defines the central village square with its farm gable. The building combines residential and agricultural functions under one roof and is characteristic of the region’s traditional hall houses. Like many farms of this type, it lost its original purpose with the end of agricultural use and most recently stood vacant.

In 2025, Kay Fischer and Jonas Käckenmester founded the non-profit Atelierhaus Prezier 8 gGmbH to preserve the listed building and bring it into new use. For several years they have been working on questions surrounding the transformation of rural building stock. In Prezier, they understand the house as a concrete site for this exploration.

The project aims to restore the historic structure and transform it into a live-work atelier that brings together living, working, and cultural exchange under one roof. Rather than fixing the building in a particular historical state, the project seeks a use that takes the existing structure seriously and continues it according to its own logic. In this sense, the house is understood as a working piece — a structure within an ongoing process of building on. Even before construction began, the building was used as an experimental site during an international summer school, establishing it from the outset as a place of both practical and conceptual work.
